A Review of "Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men"

DEAD DREAMS OF MONOCHROME MEN (1990, 52 min., b&w) is visually as stunning as George Platt Lyne's dance photos, as suspenseful as an Alfred Hitchcock thriller and as wrenching as a play by Jean Genet. The video was based on the original stage work derived from the diaries of a mass murderer, Dennis Nielsen. While violence is always imminent in this work, the choreographer and director also focus on the unexpected tenderness of four men who are too desperate to control their needs or suppress their fears. From the opening sequence, in which the male leads cruise each other under a pulsing disco light, to its nightmarish conclusion, the story unfolds with an admirable refinement and intelligence.
