There were four performances at this innovative presentation where the audience got to vote on which dance company was the best. All four were fairly downtown-ish modern dance.

The first three performances had pluses and minuses, but today I am going to choose to focus on the dance company I thought was a genuine find.

Adrian Clark and Leslie Kraus danced Drop Down, choreographed by Kate Weare. This dance showcased consistently sharp transitions and good stillness. Even Adrian's gyrations had control. There were many Tango-esque moves interpreted in a Modern style. They made this fusion make sense. Their partnering was as tight as one might hope to see in a top level Tango couple. The dancers had good extension. The choreography employed interesting use of levels. The sections of the dance were sufficiently varied to keep things interesting. Again, Kate Weare and her dancers are a genuine find.

If I were to produce one of my perfect programs, I would include Drop Down with Jennifer Muller's Passion Fruit, and an excerpt from Swango, and if the audience was indulgent enough with their time, an excerpt from Paul Taylor's Piazzolla Caldera. I think Drop Down would hold its own in the company of such works. And, of course, we would have to hold a milonga after the show.
