Gender and Self-Promotion - thoughts on 'When Women Rule' by Nicholas Kristof

by Robert Abrams
February 10, 2008
Nicholas Kristof writes that "[Research has shown that] the very same words are rated higher coming from a man [than from a woman]. One lesson from this research is that promoting their own successes is a helpful strategy for ambitious men. But experiments have demonstrated that when women highlight their accomplishments, that's a turn-off. And women seem even more offended by self-promoting females than men are." (When Women Rule by Nicholas Kristof, NY Times, 2/10/2008, p. WK13)

Mr. Kristof discusses the issue of self-promotion in the context of both politics and business. This research has potentially important applications to dance. For instance, how do male and female dance students perceive the promotional efforts of male and female dance teachers? I think this is a question that deserves further study.
