DANCE CENTER PRESENTS CHICAGO DEBUT OF DELFOS DANZA CONTEMPORÁNEA

Mexico's Premier Contemporary Dance Company Performs April 2-4

CHICAGO-Recognized as one of Latin America's most important contemporary dance companies, Delfos Danza Contemporánea from Mexico makes its Chicago debut to conclude the 2008-09 season of The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago. Performances are April 2-4, 2009, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Delfos also concludes the 10th Anniversary Season of The Dance Center's FamilyDance Matinee Series, presenting a special program geared toward children and families, preceded by a free movement workshop with the artists, on Saturday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
On The Dance Center program is Rincones de Luz (Light Corners), comprising five works that showcase the choreography of founders Victor Manuel Ruiz and Claudia Lavista as well as company members Omar Carrum and Xitlali Pina. The music ranges from the deep spirituality of Vivaldi to the vocal experimentation of Meredith Monk, from the seductive "Bolero" of Ravel to the penetrating chords of Michael Gordon.

As part of Delfos's residency, there will be a post-performance discussion with the artists on Thursday, April 2. Claudia Lavista also will lead a DanceMasters class Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m. at the Lou Conte Dance Studio of the Hubbard Street Dance Center, 1147 W. Jackson Blvd. DanceMasters is a series of community master classes presented by The Dance Center's division of Community Outreach and Education (COE). Spring 2009 DanceMasters is funded in part by The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, in partnership with the Lou Conte Dance Studio of the Hubbard Street Dance Center and the Chicago Cultural Center. Classes are for dancers at the intermediate level or higher.

Delfos Danza Contemporánea was founded in 1992 by Mexican choreographers and dancers Victor Manuel Ruiz and Claudia Lavista with the objective of opening a space for creation, exchanges, professional training and communication through contemporary dance. Delfos is a laboratory of images and emotions in movement arising from the creation of work that comes from introspection. Its purpose is not to approach dance as an illustrative event but rather to arrive at an intimacy with this everyday art and to discover hidden worlds that can spring up inside the same dance. The aesthetic vision of the members has given the company a unique personality characterized by the fluency, physicality and poetry contained in each one of their works. The company has staged all its work with this trait in mind, whether it is choreography for the general public, projects for children, co-productions with other dance companies or stagings for opera, television and video. Delfos received the Mexican National Dance Award in 1992, 1997 and 2002 and the Award as The Best Dance Company in Mexico by the Critics Union. Writing for the Los Angeles Times, Sara Wolf described Delfos's "signature style" as "propelled by an expressive force rooted in a Modern-with-a-capital-M dance sensibility."

The Dance Center's presentation of Delfos Danza Contemporánea is supported in part by the Illinois Arts Council. Special thanks to the Consulate General of Mexico, Chicago.

The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, named "Chicago's Best Dance Theatre" by Chicago magazine and "Best Dance Venue" by the Chicago Reader, is the city's leading presenter of contemporary dance, showcasing artists of regional, national and international significance. Cheney Foundation, The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, The Irving Harris Foundation, The Mayer & Morris Kaplan Family Foundation, The Japan Foundation and the New England Foundation for the Arts.
