BookExpo America 2010

by Robert Abrams
May 29, 2010
New York, NY
Jacob Javits Convention Center
I attended BookExpo America recently. The experience was eye-opening.

I attended a panel on children's literature. I especially liked the idea, presented by Mitali Perkins (author of the novel Bamboo People), that novels can be "window books" or "mirror books", and sometimes both. A window book is one that helps someone see another person's culture. A mirror book is one that helps a person see their own culture. Sometimes seeing another culture can be a way of reflecting on one's own culture.

I also spent two days walking the exhibit hall. If you love books, BookExpo America is close to paradise and worth attending, but wear comfortable shoes because you will do a lot of walking. There were a huge number of books, many of them new or about to be released, on display. Authors were signing their books from opening to closing each day, with many of the books given to attendees at no extra charge or for a small suggested donation. BookExpo America was also a great place to learn about the current state of the publishing industry: traditional publishing, self-publishing and eBooks. If you are thinking about writing and publishing a book, it would be well worth your while to attend BookExpo America before making a decision on how to publish your book.

There were plenty of dance-related books on display as well. I have requested review copies of some of the dance-related children's books from several publishers, so check back to ExploreDance.com periodically for dance book news.
