PMT Spring Dance Series 2012: Eclectic, Electric!

I reviewed PMT's spring showcase for the first time just over three years ago. My world, as far as dance goes, was very different then. My main focus for many years had been fitness. But in 2008, a friend convinced me to try partner dancing. So I took classes in West Coast swing and hustle, and had just begun working on my first ProAm theatre arts number. I hadn't been before an audience in many years, and though I thoroughly enjoyed the 2009 PMT showcase, I didn't even begin to imagine myself participating in that kind of performance.

Fast forward to April 27, 2012. In the intervening years, I did numerous ProAm performances and competitions before shoulder injuries made it difficult to continue. Instead, I went to Broadway Dance Center and Alvin Ailey and participated in student showcases there. I say all this because I experienced the 2012 PMT showcase from an entirely different place, understanding the demands of teamwork and the challenge of working with all levels throughout.

First, kudos to PMT for including a potpourri of dance styles, from hip hop to ballet and contemporary — and for producing a showcase that provided an opportunity for dancers at all levels to perform in a welcoming, yet professional, environment. My friends and I applauded all of the participants for having the courage and commitment to work hard and get out in front of an audience.

Many of the numbers were energetic and — particularly in the case of Pavan Thimmaiah's "Cherry Bomb"— sexy. I especially enjoyed that number, the opening "Bulletproof," and "Whisper," a hip hop piece that demanded a good deal of core strength.

There were moments when the performer in me wanted to shout out: "You should be in character the moment you step on the stage, so don't shuffle in like that! And please, no talking when you're offstage." And, as my friend Reiko Sugitani, who also saw the 4 pm show that Saturday commented, "While everyone danced wonderfully and we could tell they were passionate about dance, a few dancers definitely stood out from the pack because of their engagement with the audience, which is very important to remember if you are dancing on stage. It's not just about the steps, it's about connecting with the audience — and most of all, having fun."

So this review is a combination of enjoyment, encouragement and feedback for the performers. There was a good deal of talent, eagerness and joy! The PMT showcase offers a great opportunity to test and explore your skills; take advantage of it, and learn. To the choreographers, thank you for taking some chances and being innovative. All in all, it made for a splendid hour or so that was alternately refreshing, inspiring and just plain entertaining.
