BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) brings Bali to New York this fall in the ensemble dance company's new Fundamentals of Balinese Dance master classes. The dance classes will be taught on October 11, 18, and 25 from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at Keystone Studio, located at 252 West 30th Street, Bell 4B, New York, New York.

BALAM, a New York City-based company, is celebrating its 35th season. The company offers a new vision of contemporary dance by combining ballet, modern and diverse cultural dance styles from around the world and historic periods with Balinese theatre. BALAM Resident Balinese Artist Nani Devi, a celebrated performer from Bali who has toured and taught throughout the world, will provide expert Balinese dance instruction that enhance a performer's and avocational dancer's physical expression.

Students will discover another culture's skilled movement patterns and experience masculine and feminine archetypes. They will learn how to develop three-dimensional hand and arm movements, acquire fierce eyes, present a mysterious, sweet smile, and much more.

No previous dance experience is necessary. Class size is limited. Fee: $15 per class. For further information and to enroll in the class, call 646-361-9183.

Nani Devi, BALAM Resident Balinese Artist

Ms. Devi specializes in and performs classical Balinese dance, as well as those from the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Sulawesi. Earlier this year, she performed in the company's eclectic, fusion style in the new program, The Faces of Love, presenting Margapati, a vibrant Balinese dance solo performed by a woman representing the power of a lion character.

Born in Bali, Indonesia, Ms. Devi began dancing at the early age of ten in the village of Tabanan. Noted for dancing with a natural grace and sweet expression, she was selected by the Indonesian government to perform in the palaces of Bali for visiting heads of state promoting Indonesian dance forms for the Ministry of Culture.

She serves as Artistic Director of the Nani Devi Indonesian Dance Company and has been an instructor at Lotus Music and Dance Studio, a gathering place for master performers and teachers of traditional world music and dance in New York City.
