Denver Ballet Theatre Presents 'Coppelia,' April 21 & 22

by Gloria Shanstrom
April 20, 2015
PACE Center, 20000 Pikes Peak Ave, Parker, CO 80138
Denver Ballet Theatre presents the beloved romantic ballet "Coppelia" at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 22 at the PACE Center, 20000 Pikes Peak Ave. Parker, CO 80138. Tickets are $28 and available online at http://pacecenteronline.ticketforce.com or by calling 303-805-6800.

"Coppélia" concerns an inventor, Dr Coppelius, who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village swain, becomes infatuated with it and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanhilde. She shows him his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor.

Featuring the dancers of Denver Ballet Theatre Academy with guest artists Christopher Moulton dancing the lead male role of Franz and Melissa Zoebisch dancing the female lead role of Swanhilda. Both are corps members with the Colorado Ballet who have also enjoyed free-lance careers. Gregory Gonzales, a former company member of Colorado Ballet and still a guest artist there, will be performing the role of Dr Coppelius.

"Coppelia" is a fully produced romantic comic ballet adorned with lavish costumes and distinctive sets designed by Robert O'Hearn, the renowned American scenic designer.

The staging is based upon two major recent productions: Act I and III are based on the Bolshoi Ballet's 2009 reconstruction, and Act II is based upon the Australian Ballet's 1990 staging by George Ogilvie and Peggy Van Praagh. Also from the Australian Ballet's staging, the men's section in Act I and a quintet in Act III.

Artistic Director David Taylor has staged the entire ballet based on these two interpretations with the exception of the Mazurka and Czardas in Act I, which were staged by Anastasiya Buechele and Melissa Zoebisch, but also based on the Bolshoi's version. Mr. Taylor has also created some additional choreography.

Denver Ballet Theatre (DBT) operates the Denver Ballet Theatre Academy, under the direction of David Taylor, which is known for its rigorous pre-professional ballet curriculum and roster of highly accomplished teachers.

In addition to operating the Academy, Denver Ballet Theatre produces full-length ballet productions and offers a Youth Summer Intensive training program each June.

Founded by former-dancer Earl Anderson, (Ballet West, Aspen Ballet) DBT has exciting expansion plans underway which will be made public soon. DBT's service to the broader community will be even more robust! For more information visit us at DenverBalletTheatre.org.
