The Trinayan Odissi Dance Collective will portray stories about five iconic heroines from the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata on Sunday August 7, 2016 at 3pm at Manhattan Movement & Arts Center.

These five powerful female characters have been immortalized by myth and legend and idolized as ideal women. Their stories come to life through the creative genius of Guru Sri Durga Charan Ranbir in his Odissi choreography know for its richly ornamented and nuanced use of the traditional form. The Trinayan Dance Collective is a nonprofit organization committed to creating evocative interpretations of Odissi dance through multilayered productions fused with music, storytelling and movements within the traditional form.

Guru Sri Durga Charan Ranbir was born January 3, 1951 hailing from rural village called Kamaguru, Khurda District, Orissa, Guru Durga Charan Ranbir is a great exponent and the leading torch-bearer of Guru Dev Prasad Das Style of Odissi Dance. He is currently working as a Professor at the Odissi Research Center and has received the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2005 from His Excellency President of India. He has a number of choreographies in Odissi dance. Each peice bears the original touch of this living legend and remains a landmark creation in the domain of Odissi Dance Form. About 300 students of India and International origin are being trained at his institute, Nrutyayan. About 100 students have received junior/senior Scholarships from the government of India. Many of his students received prestigious awards including the Maharishi Award, "Sanskriti Sammaan." Many students are Grade A artists of Doordarshan. His institute has been invited all over the world to perform in countries such as France, Venezuela, Malaysia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, South Korea, China, and Kazakhastan.

Bani Ray (Odissi Dance) started learning Odissi dance at the age of 6 from Late Guru Hare Krishna Behraji. She was invited to perform by the Indian government in Trinidad, Tobago, and by the Department of Tourism of New York in Guyana and the United States. She has also performed all over India. Bani Ray has been a Panel artist for the Education Department from 2004-2006, a Roaster of artist in the Arts Council of New Jersey, a Panel artist of ICCR (Gov. of India) and is currently doing in depth research for Odissi Dance under the teachings of Guru Shri Durga Charan Ranbir.

Rajika Puri - Sutradhari' (Narrator who 'carries-the-thread') is a senior member of the Deba Prasad Das Odissi gurukul, trained also in Bharatanatyam, who has given solo recitals around the world - including a command performance for the President of Mexico. After playing narrator/goddess Kali in a Lincoln Center Theater production directed by Julie Taymor (of Lion King on Broadway), she embarked on a career in western theatre, which led her to develop a form of danced storytelling -"Sutradhari Natyam" - in which she accompanies her dancing with songs and chants in Sanskrit interwoven with a narration in English. Her first stories were developed as narrator for productions by NY students of Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, and as Narrator/Sutradhar for Lotus' NY Ramayana in 2003. She is delighted to be in involved in a production devised by her Guru Durga Charan Ranbir. (Also known as co-curator for two major festivals of Indian dance in the city: World Music Institute's Dancing the Gods and IAAC's Erasing Borders, Rajika is currently on the nominating committee for the NY Dance and Performance Awards: the "Bessies")
