Choreographed by ChristinaNoel in collaboration with the dancers, and danced by The Creature to live music and text composed and performed by ChristinaNoel and Aeric Meredith-Goujon, the semi-theatrical dance piece, Belly, is a panoptic review of our treatment of others. Through forced interactions around a dinner table, The Creature’s fluctuating proximity juxtaposes closeness and camaraderie with the inability to fully realize empathy for other human beings. Through both comedic and tragic lenses, Belly scopes the depths of white privilege and institutional racism. In the end the question becomes; how can we continue to reorganize our perceptions and differences to reach mutual understanding?

“One of the most impressive and unique elements of Reaves' work is her character development- through the intersection of dance and theater, the characters reveal themselves as three dimensional and complex…interact[ing] with the frankness of youth.”
-The Dance Enthusiast

Dancers: Maddie Irmen, Jonathan Matthews, Jasmin Simmons, Amadi Washington
Musicians: Aeric Meredith-Goujon, Cameron Mizell, ChristinaNoel Reaves

ChristinaNoel & The Creature is a Brooklyn based dance company comprised of dancers, musicians, and visual artists that focuses on creating a hybrid performance medium utilizing the dancers’ voices, bodies, as well as drawing from their perspectives. The resulting medium envelopes viewers visually and aurally in multi-textured environments derived from human connections and encounters. The Creature is dedicated to creating a space that facilitates dialogue and educational outreach by striving to expand conventional ideas of dance performance.

The Creature is driven by Artistic Director & Choreographer, ChristinaNoel Reaves in collaboration with Visual Director & Composer Aeric Meredith-Goujon who participates actively in the creative process. ChristinaNoel & Aeric also collaborate musically to generate original music performed live for Creature pieces.

All the artists within The Creature are dedicated to the joys of fearless creation and expression; together committing to the process and exploration of regular training as a group in order to expand our understanding of dance performance and expression. “You are creating within a completely new genre of dance” - Gus Solomons Jr
