Works & Process at the Guggenheim announces Juilliard Dance: New Dances

On Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 7:30pm, Works & Process at the Guggenheim presents excerpts of new works by four innovative choreographers performed by Juilliard Dance students prior to premiere—John Heginbotham (1st year); Katarzyna Skarpetowska (2nd year); Pam Tanowitz (3rd year); and Matthew Neenan (4th year). Artistic director Lawrence Rhodes discusses the creative process with the choreographers.

Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, John Heginbotham is a Brooklyn-based choreographer, performer, and teacher. He graduated from The Juilliard School in 1993 with a BFA in Dance. John was a member of the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) from 1998 – 2012. In 2014, John was awarded the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award in recognition of his unique choreographic vision and promise. In addition, he is a two-time recipient of the Jerome Robbins Foundation New Essential Works (NEW) Fellowship (2010, 2012). In addition to his work with Dance Heginbotham, John’s choreography has been presented at venues including The Museum of Modern Art, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, and the New York and Toronto Fringe Festivals, among others. John is a founding teacher of Dance for PD®, an ongoing collaboration between the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. danceheginbotham.org

Katarzyna Skarpetowska is a native of Warsaw, Poland. She received a BFA from The Juilliard School in 1999 under Artistic Director Benjamin Harkarvy. Kate was a member of Parsons Dance from 1999 until 2006 where she performed lead roles in the company’s repertory including the iconic CAUGHT. From 2007 until 2014, she danced for The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company performing at many reputable venues such as New York City’s City Center, Washington DC’s Kennedy Center and Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater. Her choreography has been performed by Richmond Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater II, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Parsons Dance, Buglisi Dance Theater, Houston METdance, Big Muddy Dance Company, Owen/Cox Dance Group, Hubbard Street 2, Bruce Wood Dance Project, among others. Pam Tanowitz has been making dances since 1992. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 and as the Hodder Fellowship from Princeton University in 2013-14. Tanowitz has been invited to create new work for The Vail International Dance Festival and City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival; has set work on The Juilliard School, Ballet Austin, New York Theater Ballet and Saint Louis Ballet; and has been a guest choreographer in the dance departments at Barnard College, Princeton University, Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, Marymount Manhattan College and Purchase College. She holds dance degrees from The Ohio State University and Sarah Lawrence College. Tanowitz is Resident Fellow at New York University's Center for Ballet and the Arts and currently teaches at Rutgers University. Matthew Neenan began his dance training at the Boston Ballet School and later attended the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts and the School of American Ballet in New York. From 1994-2007, Matthew danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet. In October 2007, Matthew was named Choreographer in Residence at the Pennsylvania Ballet. Matthew’s choreography has been featured and performed by numerous ballet companies, including the Pennsylvania Ballet, BalletX, The Washington Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Ballet West, Ballet Memphis, Milwaukee Ballet, etc. He has received awards and grants for his choreography from the National Endowment of the Arts, Dance Advance funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Choo San Goh Foundation, and the Independence Foundation. In 2005, Matthew co-founded BalletX with fellow dancer Christine Cox. BalletX is now the resident dance company at the prestigious Wilma Theatre. Works & Process at the Guggenheim

Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, has championed new works and offered audiences unprecedented access to generations of leading creators and performers.
