Once again the New York City Ballet threw one of the best parties of the year. This year the mezzanine of the New York State Theater was transformed into a fancifully imagined version of Tokyo, complete with Japanese lanterns. The event started with green tea martinis on the terrace. After thanks were expressed by Candace Bushnell and others for the roughly $400,000 the event raised for NYCB, the winners of the raffle prizes were drawn. Members of NYCB put on one of their signature unique shows. Following the show, the floor filled with party-goers who danced the night away. As is to be expected at an event like this, most of the crowd was bopping, but a few couples were showing off formal partner dance moves. As usual at this event, most of the music was Hustle-compatible, plus a few good West Coast Swing songs. As the night gets later, the music tends to turn more hip-hoppy, but even some of that was West Coast Swing compatible. As Robert Royston likes to say, you can dance West Coast to almost anything. The event included dinner and the usual benefit goodie bags. The conversation with our table-mates was good. Also as usual, many attendees came dressed in fanciful interpretations of the event's theme. I wasn't organized enough for that this year and went in a tux with a vaguely Japanese looking bowtie I had bought in London years ago. Tickets to the event were $350 and up this year. If you love the work of the New York City Ballet, attending Dance with the Dancers is a great way to show your support. If you are a social dancer, I strongly recommend that you bring your own partner. Also, as I have learned from dancing at other similar events, the floor is much more crowded than at a typical partner dance event, so you need to pay extra attention to keeping your steps smaller than usual and your floorcraft tight. Do that and you will be glad you attended Dance with the Dancers because the energy of the room is exceptional.
