A must-read is "Remembering Nureyev, A Trail of a Comet," by Rudi van Dantzig, choreographer and artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet, 1971-1991. Although a recent book by Julie Kavanaugh won acclaim recounting Nureyev's exploits, Van Dantzig, as his choreographer and friend from 1968 after Nureyev's sensational defection in 1961, is sympathetic to his pressure of being a "star" at every performance and in finding new vehicles for his appearances. The book traces his day from morning class through rehearsals and evening performances. Although audiences will still wallow in the scandals, van Dantzig arouses a better understanding of the star's pressured, disturbed, lonesome and physically driven existence.
Issued from the Dutch translation, the book is available through University Press of Florida/Gainsville, in bookstores of through www.upf.com.

"Gotta Tango," describes, illustrates and explains the fundamental concepts and techniques of the Argentine tango through master teachers Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart. The book and video combination provides a logical and structured approach as tools to understanding and beginning, or expanding in tango dance. From Human Kinetics, the publisher also has produced "Gotta Ballroom," by Christine Zona and Chris George. It includes an introduction to ballroom dance: the waltz, foxtrot and other forms; complete with a discs. The Human Kinetics catalog is intriguing: P.O. Box 5076, Champaign, IL 61825-5076 or www.HumanKinetics.com.

For young readers, 'Meet the Dancers: From Ballet, Broadway and Beyond," presents the stories of dancers in ballet companies, on Broadway and television sharing their stories from first dance class to becoming first-class dancers. By Amy Nathan for Henry Holt and Company, Books for Young Readers, can be found in bookstores.

"In Classic Style: The Splendor of the American Ballet Theatre," by Nancy Ellison contains 275 color photographs of ABT dancers covering 65 years of the Theatre's classic, standard-bearing presentations. It includes on-stage photos of productions from "Swan Lake" and "Giselle" to "Cinderella" in modern dress. ABT's major international stars are beautifully photographed in full sets and costumes. The book is a cocktail-table winner, 11x17 inches and a precious historical keepsake. Created through Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., it is available in bookstores or through: jnapp@rizzoliusa.com.
