Impressing the Czar Royal Ballet of Flanders Thursday, July 17, 2008 8:00 PM Rose Theater
Lincoln Center Festival Choreographer William Forsythe
In this magnificently conceived and imaginative production, the Royal Ballet of Flanders from Belgium, stages celebrated choreographer William Forsythe's masterpiece, Impressing the Czar.
Described by The Observer (England) as "a ballet purist and the high priest of post-structural contemporary dance," Forsythe created Impressing the Czar around In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, a stand-alone piece of pure dance he choreographed for the Paris Opera Ballet.
Impressing the Czar is a triumphant and kaleidoscopic journey through juxtaposed time, a mélange of genres and styles from the classical to the contemporary set to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Eva Crossman-Hecht, Leslie Stuck and longtime Forsythe collaborator Thom Willems.
From a fairytale court and a comically absurd auction, to a company of unbridled Catholic schoolgirls in a tribal dance set to the music and rhythms of today, Impressing the Czar transcends the conventional to establish a new and extensive choreographic vocabulary.
This performance is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. No late seating.
