Chen Dance Center is pleased to present the first of two weekends in their semi-annual emerging choreographer's series – newsteps. Introduced in 1994 and presenting the work of over 138 young artists, this series was created to support the community of emerging choreographers who are developing innovative and risk-taking works. It has received acclaim in Dance Magazine, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Downtown Express, and The Villager. The choreographers are selected through an open audition by a panel of prominent artists, with this year's panel including Peggy H. Cheng, Dian Dong, Rosalind Newman, and Ellis Wood.

This series will feature six premieres from Catherine Galasso, Whitney Jacobs & Christopher Campbell, Toni Renee Johnson, Molly Lieber, Siri Peterson, and Makiko Tamura.

The array of work provided by these inventive choreographers offers something for everyone. Galasso, an award-winning choreographer in Kosovo, has created an expressionistic and fantastical representation of Elvis Presley as a multi-faceted metaphor entitled The Passion of a Hillbilly Greaser. Jacobs & Campbell, whose own company Jacobs/Campbell Dance debuted at the Tank earlier this year, will present Unibody, which investigates the give and take of symbiotic relationships through an intensely physical duet. In the quintet John Doe, Johnson, a choreographer who has studied with and performed in works by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Alonzo King, and Nia Love, explores maturity and its development in learning to grow past situations that momentarily hold one back. A previous presenter at Greenspace and the HATCH, Lieber will introduce My Angle, a duet focusing on the intricacies of a lasting relationship where the performers explore how much each person has to lean in order to stand on common ground. Peterson, an artist whose psychologically based movement explores different states of being and relating to others, navigates the liminal zone of a relationship in drop me, I'm falling, where greater intimacy is both compelling and repelling simultaneously. Lastly, Tamura, a Japanese native, offers an intriguing work, Order Made, which is centered on words drawn from the phrase "back to back" and then transformed into sounds and movement.

Travel: By subway: Take 6, N, R, W, Q, M, J to Canal Street. Walk east along Canal Street towards Chinatown. Turn right on Mulberry Street. Walk one block south to Bayard Street. The theater is on the second floor in the former P.S. 23 on the northeast corner of Mulberry & Bayard.
