Think Punk!, from Armitage Gone Dance! March 4-7 and March 11-14 at The Kitchen, New York City

by Sarah Hart
March 4, 2009
The Kitchen
512 West 19th Street
The pieces comprising Think Punk! provide a glimpse into the three-decade
evolution of Armitage's artistry: Drastic Classicism (1981), which is set to
a clangorous score by Rhys Chatham and delivers a skewed classical
vocabulary with full force, often at breakneck speed; The Watteau Duets
(1985), which is set to music by David Linton and deconstructs the ballet
pas de deux; the deft, wry Wild Thing (1987), featuring music by Jimi
Hendrix and a set by Jeff Koons; and the world premiere, Mashup, which
features an original score by Daniel Iglesia.

Think Punk! will be performed by eleven dancers: Leonides Arpon, Kristina
Bethel, Giorgia Bovo, Megumi Eda, Dana Ingraham, William Isaac, Luke Manley,
Matthew Prescott, Abbey Roesner, Bennyroyce Royon and Masayo Yamaguchi. Live
music for the various pieces, overseen by Music Director John King, will be
performed by TALIBAM!, the New York-based noise rock/free jazz duo comprised
of Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea (The Watteau Duets); the guitarists Sarah
Lipstate, Steve Gunn, Paul Duncan, and Tom Gerke (Drastic Classicism); and
the drummer Kevin Shea (Drastic Classicism and Mashup). Think Punk! also
features lighting design by Clifton Taylor and costume design by longtime
Armitage collaborator Peter Speliopoulos as well as costumes by the painter
David Salle and the video artist Charles Atlas.

Mashup, performed by the whole company, is inspired by the work of French
Situationist philosopher Guy Debord, especially his The Society of the
Spectacle. Armitage's piece is a choreographic representation of the
Debordian notion of détournement, which entails turning alienating forces
into something personal and free. Daniel Iglesia's original score for Mashup
combines Mozart's 1779 Sinfonia Concertante with X-Ray Spex's "Oh Bondage,
Up Yours!"

Think Punk! will run Wednesday-Saturday, March 4-7 and March 11-14 at The
Kitchen (512 West 19th Street). All performances begin at 8:00 P.M. Tickets
are $15.

Thanks for the consideration.

Best,
Blake
