BAM 2009 Spring Season is sponsored by Bloomberg
Brooklyn, NY/January 27, 2009-BAM presents the return of director/choreographer Ohad Naharin and Israel's Batsheva Dance Company in the New York City premiere of Max, an exploration of the pains and pleasures of being alive. Performed by ten dancers to original music by Maxim Waratt (Naharin's musical pseudonym), Max is noted for its striking gestural language that veers from clenched and concentrated to lush and expansive. Described by The Jerusalem Post as "an evening to remember," Max reinforces Naharin's international reputation for pushing the boundaries of dance. The New York Times has described Naharin's choreography as "Š stunningly flexible limbs and spines, deeply grounded movement, explosive bursts and a vitality that grabs a viewer by the collar Š"
BAM will present four performances of Max in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House
(30 Lafayette Avenue) on March 4-7 at 7:30pm. Tickets-priced at $20, 35, 45, and 55-may be purchased by calling BAM Ticket Services at 718.636.4100 or online at BAM.org.

About the artists
Since its founding in 1964 by Martha Graham and Baroness Batsheva De Rothschild, Batsheva Dance Company has become one of the most influential cultural institutions in Israel. The appointment of Ohad Naharin as artistic director in 1990 honed Batsheva's mission: to strengthen common human values through the power of creativity. A compact yet dynamic organization, Batsheva presents over 200 performances a year in Israel and in the world's most renowned theaters and festivals. Batsheva's artistic innovation has earned the company its reputation as one of the world's most sought-after companies-a beacon on the global map of performing arts. This engagement marks the company's fourth appearance at BAM. Batsheva made its BAM debut in Spring 2002 in Naharin's Virus, followed by Mamootot (2005 Next Wave Festival), and Three (2007 Next Wave Festival).
Ohad Naharin was born in Israel on a kibbutz. He began his training as a dancer with Batsheva Dance Company in 1974. A year later at the invitation of Martha Graham he came to New York to join her company as well as to take advantage of a scholarship to the School of American Ballet. After a year with the Graham Company he elected to complete his studies at The Juilliard School, as well as with Maggie Black and David Howard. He then joined the Maurice Béjart Company in Brussels for one season. Naharin made his choreographic debut in 1980 at the Kazuko Hirabayashi studio in New York. In 1990 he was named artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company. In addition to his work with Batsheva, Naharin has choreographed and staged his work for many international dance companies including Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, The Paris Opera Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballett Frankfurt, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Ballet Nacional Madrid. Naharin ! has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1998, two New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Awards (for Naharin's Virus performed at BAM in 2002 and for Anaphaza performed at the Lincoln Center Festival in 2003), the prestigious "Israeli Prize" in the field of dance in 2005, and most recently, a Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa by the Hebrew University in 2008. Naharin is both an American and Israeli citizen; he received his American citizenship in 1990.

About the Artist Talk and Demonstration
On Tuesday, March 3 at 7pm, Naharin and dancers from Batsheva Dance Company will demonstrate the Gaga dance technique-Naharin's evolving language of movement research designed to access an ever-expanding range of physicality through the imagery of sensation. Tickets for the Artist Talk and demonstration with Naharin and dancers are $8, $4 for Friends of BAM and can be purchased via BAM.org or 718.636.4100.
