Studio Series

New York, NY, March 11, 2009 – Rebecca Davis culminates her 100-hour residency as a part of Dance Theater Workshop's Studio Series with a performance of loving means ramming. In this work-in-progress doppelgangers, antipodes, friends, lovers, and other doubles pass through intimate, indifferent, and humorous moments culled from disparate sources like Thai Massage, obituaries, somatic practices, the weather, and computer spam. The excerpt is part of a larger work entitled what I'm saying is born from the weather. loving means ramming features Yarí Alcaraz, Davis, Andrea Johnston, Deborah Karp, and Stephanie Lazzara, with Carol Astle, Carrie J. Brown, Eve Chalom, Alison D'Amato, Ann Marie Dragich, Kate Garroway, Lindsey Kelley, Elizabeth Matias, Amanda Selgrath, Sarah White, and Anna Wueller. Costumes are by Davis and Vilem Benes, and music is by Matt Marble.
Performances will take place at Dance Theater Workshop in David R. White Studio on the third floor, April 10-11 (Friday – Saturday at 7:30pm). There will be a Post-Performance talk with Sara Nash on April 11 (Saturday). Tickets are free with a suggested donation of $5 at the door. Tickets can be reserved in person at the box office or by calling (212) 924-0077. Dance Theater Workshop is located at 219 West 19th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues.
About the Artist
Rebecca Davis makes movement and objects. Her work has been presented at Danspace Project, The Chocolate Factory, Linfield Art Gallery, The Old American Can Factory, and PS 122. She has performed in the work of Ursula Eagly, Juliette Mapp, RoseAnne Spradlin, Ansley Vandenbroucke, and Christopher Williams. She founded and curated the Dance Forum series at the Brooklyn Museum from 2001-2006. Davis is the Director of Education and Outreach at Trisha Brown Dance Company, where she has worked since 2002. She is currently rehearsing Deborah Hay's I'll Crane For You, the 2008 Solo Performance Commissioning Project, and finishing her certification in the Feldenkrais Method.
The Studio Series brings new artistic voices to Dance Theater Workshop and opens our studios for public showings. Eight artists each year receive a 100-hour creative residency in our studios and a commission/stipend. This residency gives each artist the opportunity to research and develop work in a raw, process-oriented space. The outcomes are shared through two informal presentations by each artist, inviting the audience to see work at different stages of development. Studio Series artists are curated internally by the Artistic Director in conjunction with Programming staff and guest curators from Urban Word NYC and Dance Theater Workshop's season artists.
loving means ramming is commissioned by Dance Theater Workshop's Commissioning and Creative Residency Program with support from The Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Jerome Robbins Foundation.
