New York City Ballet's Society in C Winter Soiree - Double FeaturePresented at the New York State Theatre

February 24, 2005 Tonight was a presentation of Susan Stroman's Double Feature. I was cleaning my apartment when I came across the invitation to the Society in C Winter Soiree. I suddenly realized that not only was the event tonight, but it was in a half an hour. On a whim I decided to call and see if any tickets were available. There were. The Society in C is a great service the New York City Ballet provides its young partrons. For a modest contribution, you get to go to many fun events and meet other people who are also interested in the ballet. Tonight was no exception. The reception started at 6:30 pm and featured an appearance by Pie, the boston terrier who steals the show in the second act. This dog has come a long way considering that he started out as a rescued dog. William Berloni, Pie's trainer, has done great work. Pie was remarkably calm during the reception considering how many people were milling about. The reception, hosted by Erica Fogg Boyer and Calvin Wood, featured a classic film theme and specialty cocktails with Jewel of Russia vodka in vibrant blue and red to match The Blue Necklace being performed later. In addition to the ballet fans, the event featured invited guests from the young patron group of the Metropolitan Opera. They provided a unique and musical perspective on the evenings festivities. The ballet itself was wonderful. Ashley Bouder gave a stirring performance as Mabel. Damian Woetzel was in fine form as the movie star Billy Randolph. During the intermission, The Double Indemnity Club (aka The Green Room) served desert, including robin's egg blue chocolate almonds, plus more vodka, wine and expresso. The conversation was lively. Between fine treatment and the comedic Makin' Whoopee (the second act), I could nearly forget the pain I was in. Almost a week ago during the last snow storm I slipped on a patch of ice, falling hard, causing the kind of deep and painful bruise that can take forever to heal. I could barely walk let alone dance. Considering that it started snowing again this evening, I can only wish the NYCB company shovels before them creating a clear path.
