Ballet Hispanico, celebrating 45 years of repertory that reflects the ever-changing diversity of Latino cultures, will be featured in Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance, a film series presenting performances by four of America’s leading companies: Ballet Hispanico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, New York City Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. Coming to over 600 U.S. cinemas on Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 pm (local time) is Ballet Hispanico, led by Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro, with two audience favorites: CARMEN.maquia, an electrifying contemporary take on Bizet’s passionate opera choreographed by Spaniard Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, and Club Havana, a virtuosic re-imagining of a sizzling nightclub by Cuban-born choreographer Pedro Ruiz. The film will include special behind-the-scenes interviews with the dancers and a glimpse of the company’s rehearsals.

Tickets for Great American Dance can be purchased online by visiting www.FathomEvents.com, or at participating theater box offices. For a complete list of theater locations, visit the Fathom Events website (theaters and participating box offices are subject to change).

“It is an honor to be a part of Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance in such esteemed company,” said Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director of Ballet Hispanico. “We’re thrilled to bring audiences two works that showcase the breadth and beauty of the Latino voice in today’s American cultural landscape.”

Jed Bernstein, President of Lincoln Center, said, “These four companies represent the height of artistic excellence and a wide range of American dance and we are proud to have them inaugurate Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance. Their programs offer something for everyone, committed dance fans and curious first-timers, many of whom rarely if ever have the opportunity to see dance performances in the theater.”

Great American Dance presentations are filmed in HD by the Emmy Award-Winning production team from Live From Lincoln Center, helmed by Executive Producer Andrew C. Wilk. Ballet Hispanico’s presentation for Great American Dance was directed for the screen by Matthew Diamond. The series is presented by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in partnership with Fathom Events.

Other dance companies featured in the series included the San Francisco Ballet on September 24, as well as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on October 22 and New York City Ballet on December 5 and 10.

Costume Construction Travis Halsey, Diana Ruettiger

Set Design and Construction Luis Crespo
Hailed as a “masterpiece” by the Chicago Sun-Times, this work—like Bizet’s iconic opera about a passionate gypsy—is riveting from start to finish. The physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco. With a visual concept inspired by Picasso’s black-and-white palette, and movement that is full of elaborate partnering, CARMEN.maquia is a bold and electrifying reimagining of this fiery and tragic tale.

Club Havana
Choreographer Pedro Ruiz
Music Israel Lopez, Rubén Gonzales, A.K. Salim, Perez Prado and Francisco Repilado
Costume Designer Ghabriello Fernando
Lighting Designer Donald Holder
The intoxicating rhythms of the conga, rumba, mambo, and cha cha are brought to life by choreographer Pedro Ruiz, a native of Cuba, in this re-imagined nightclub populated by virtuoso dancers.
