FringeArts presents its final show of the winter season, a world premiere collaboration from Philadelphia native Gabrielle Revlock and Russian-based Aleksandr Frolov, Show No Show, running March 24-26,2016. This ever-evolving duet comes to FringeArts’ waterfront headquarters, 140 N Columbus Blvd. (at Race St.). Described on both artists’ websites as “a truth or dare using a peach, a megaphone, two chairs, and a white tablecloth,” Show No Show charts the process of two people getting to know each other for the first time; all awkwardness, openness, and vulnerability—and not many boundaries. Unpredictable and entrancing, they use each other and the space to mine the complexities of opening oneself up to another, laying bare the hilarious, maddening, and heartbreaking feelings that come with it.

Revlock and Frolov met during a three-week residency at the Omi International Arts Center in August of 2014 where they began developing this new work, but their connection was not immediate. In conversation with FringeArts, Revlock recalled their first partnership for an exercise early on in the residency: “It was super awkward and did not go well and so I thought, ‘Okay, tried that, didn’t work, no chemistry, moving on.’” Thankfully, the two had another chance to work together before the residency’s end and found the previously absent connection they needed to keep experimenting. “We found a really good chemistry and share a sense of humor. I guess that’s why it
continued.”

The two left their residency with thirty minutes of material and have continued to build the piece since. What they plan to bring to FringeArts will be the culmination of a year and a half of
development, including a residency in North Carolina in early March where they intend to finish the work before bringing it to Philadelphia. When asked what their focus may be in fine-tuning the
performance, Revlock noted, “Timing and rhythm are important. Keeping it alive is important. Activating the actual performance space.”

The title, Show No Show, came from Frolov and as Revlock puts it, “gets at a [notion of] are we performing or are we not performing—both for the audience and for each other.” It also points to the
disparate perspectives the two performers have within the piece, Revlock possessing a more outward focus, even checking in with the audience at points, and Frolov displaying little awareness of his performer status. As Revlock describes it, the audience will be flies on the wall, in close proximity but nonintrusive.

ABOUT GABRIELLE REVLOCK

Gabrielle Revlock is known for her signature work with the hoop and is an award-winning performer/dance-maker based in New York City. Her work has been presented in Tokyo, The Hague, Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Provincetown, Pittsburgh and at multiple venues in and around New York including New York Live Arts, Joyce Soho and JACK.

She holds a 2015 Independence Foundation Fellowship and has received support from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The A.W.A.R.D. Show, SCUBA National Touring Network for Dance, Puffin Foundation, Omi International Arts Center and The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Interested in bridging experimentation and populism, she directed and edited the online video So You Think You Can’t Understand Contemporary Dance? starring her favorite 5 year old. She has danced for Lucinda Childs, Susan Rethorst and is a member of Jane Comfort & Company.

ABOUT ALEKSANDR FROLOV

Aleksandr Frolov is a contemporary dancer, choreographer and teacher based Yekaterinburg,Russia. He graduated with a degree from the Liberal Arts University of Yekaterinburg andstarted the duet company Zonk’a with Anna Shchekleina. His work has been presented throughout Russia and he is frequently commissioned to create dances for other companies including the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre. His work has received numerous prizes including Winner of IX All-Russia Festival of Modern Dance. Currently, his work is nominated for a Golden Mask, the most prestigious award for performance in Russia. He was a dancer with Provincial Dances Theatre (Russia) and S’poart (France).
