"Bette Davis Ain't For Sissies" is a solo show written and performed by Jessica Sherr, presented tonight at the Episcopal Actor's Guild (a gem of a space with a long history of helping artists in need or in development). "Bette Davis" was a gripping solo show from start to finish. It had minimal dancing, but I can take a night off for a multi-dimensional character portrayal. I knew of Bette Davis before tonight, but now I feel I know her and her story well. Well enough that I would see the show again - and I should also look up Ms. Davis' movies and watch them. With Ms. Sherr's drama this good, Ms. Sherr's crowd funded series "Scratch This" is definitely worth a look (she is collaborating on "Scratch This" with Jessica Alexandra Green and Laura Dowling Shea). Tonight there was a major, thunderous rain storm as the show was going on. The storm felt perfectly cued, adding an aural ambience to Ms. Sherr's already considerable powerful voice. Ms. Davis' story, as told by Ms. Sherr, hopefully will inspire female artists to stand up for their artistic vision, boldly.
