By Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower April 28, 2003 The Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) 2003 International Student Ballet and Contemporary Dance Competition, Awards Ceremony was held the night after the Finals at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, NY. Susan Jaffe, who has been involved with YAGP for some time, co-hosted the Awards ceremony with Sergey Gordeev, YAGP Public Relations Director. I happen to have attended Susan Jaffe's retirement dance at American Ballet Theatre, a couple of years ago, and she was always one of my favorite ballerinas. It was good to see her again, looking so involved in her life passion. Sergey Gordeev has a buoyant personality, very articulate and dynamic. They were a great team to keep these nervous students, teachers, parents, choreographers, judges, and award presenters in a positive and secure ambiance. In addition to the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards for the male and female dancers of each age division, Scholarships were offered for Summer Intensive Sessions to American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Harrod Conservatory, Pennsylvania Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Universal Ballet, Canada National Ballet, John Cranko School, Stuttgart Ballet, and Winnipeg Ballet. There were also special prizes for Contemporary Dance and many Scholarships awarded to join Ballet Companies, such as the Ailey School, Colorado Ballet, Boston Ballet, Brooklyn Ballet Theater, Universal ballet, Walnut hill School for the Arts, Washington School of Ballet, and Stuttgart Ballet. Awards were also presented to join the Paris Opera Ballet School, the Royal Ballet School, Boston Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre (The Grand Prix Award). Top Teacher, Top Choreographer, and Top School Awards were presented, as well as Ensemble Awards and Grishko Model Search. Students received glass sculptures, variously colored long-stem roses, and bags stuffed with prizes. The Judges sat along the right stage and beamed onto many of the stars of the future in Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Kudos to Susan Jaffe and Sergey Gordeev for their good humor and warmth, organization and energy. Congratulations to all the winners and all the participants.
