Copacabana at OhmWhere: New York, NY Address: 16 West 22nd Street New York, NY 10010 Phone: (212) 582-2672 Web: www.copacabanany.com Reviewer: Robert Abrams Date reviewed: 8/4/01
The Copacabana is now temporarily occupying space at Ohm. The Copacabana's old space, which until recently was its new space, fell victim to real estate development trends. Until Copacabana Space 4 is ready, they bring their classic blend of Salsa and Merengue to Ohm. They will be there Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights for about 11 months until their new space at 34th Street and 11th Avenue opens. I got there on a Saturday night a little after 10 PM. There was the usual club velvet rope, and then, they frisk you for weapons before you get to pay the $15 cover ($25 if you come after 11 PM). There was a DJ playing Salsa and a handful of people were dancing. I had dinner there. The food was good. There were a lot of people dancing by about 11 PM. The music was good. The band started playing around 1 AM. The downside of Ohm. No coat or bag check room. Even when you clearly have a group at a table, the wait staff comes and clears wine glasses from the table, even if you have ordered an entire bottle of wine. The floor is concrete covered in paint. Anyway, it is very hard. They lose points for the lack of a wood floor. Unlike Hush, Babalu and elsewhere, they never played any Cha-Cha. All in all, the group I was with had a great time. The problems were relatively minor and are fixable.
