King Arthur and his knights went in search of the Holy Grail. I have been in search of the holy grail of dance photography: a camera that can take decent pictures of people moving in low light without using a flash. I think I am getting closer to finding it. I tested a Canon Digital Rebel Xti tonight. Set at ISO 1600 with a 24 mm 1.4 lens, the aperture opened to 1.4, I was able to get reasonable pictures with shutter speeds ranging from about 1/125 to 1/50. The pictures are not too grainy and reasonably sharp. While the pictures are reasonable, I am not completely satisfied either. Canon makes several smaller sized digital SLR cameras that are capable of reaching ISO 3200. Such a camera, coupled with the same 1.4 lens, should allow the shutter speed to be a little faster, while also resulting in a slightly brighter picture. I hope to test one of these ISO 3200 capable cameras soon.
