Cleveland, OH —Cleveland Public Theatre's Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud to present DanceWorks 2014, an annual showcase of contemporary dance. DanceWorks 2014 features six dance companies from the Northeast Ohio region, including Inlet Dance Theatre, Travesty Dance Group, Double-Edge Dance, Antaeus Dance, Shen & Bones Performance Group and Verb Ballets. Companies premiere new work and revive popular performances, presented as single or double bills over 4 weekends. A complete list with show descriptions is below. Inlet Dance Theatre In Concert Inlet Dance Theatre returns to Cleveland Public Theatre with three new works by Bill Wade - "Angels Unaware, 10" (a duet honoring Joshua Brown and Elizabeth Pollert's 10th season) and "Fire" – the third installment in Four Elements. Audience will also experience sections of a new piece, "Nature Displays", inspired by the exhibit Nature's Mating Games: Beyond the Birds and the Bees at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History WEEK 2: APRIL 17 – 19 (double bill)
Travesty Dance Group SoloSoloIn this striking evening of dance and live music, Artistic Director Kimberly Karpanty's dance solos are performed by herself and TDG company dancers, accompanied in performance by live musicians. Contemporary scores for solo piano, cello, French horn, percussion and voice will be played by nationally-recognized musicians Quinn Kalmansson and Claudia Howard Queen. Double-Edge DanceDouble-Edge Dance presents a selection of diverse works choreographed by Kora Radella, ranging from solos to sextets, accompanied by musical compositions from Michelle Birsky and DEDance co-founder/saxophonist, Ross Feller. Enjoy compelling performances by DED company members and special guest artists from Radella's "fearlessly physical" new dance project, boomerang. WEEK 3: APRIL 24 – 26 (double bill)
Antaeus DanceEvents Leading Up to My DeathAntaeus Dance plumbs the depths with two dramatic premieres by Artistic Director Joan Meggitt and company member Heather Koniz, with new music by Greg D'Alessio. Events Leading Up to My Death delves into the mystery of a person's undoing. Let My Hero In dives headlong into the maelstrom of addiction. Shen & Bones Performance GroupBetweensBetweens implies space and, more specifically, the space that completes the whole - referred to as "Ma" in Japanese culture. Experience "Ma" through eight distinct dances by Shen & Bones Performance Group, known for their striking, visceral works that blend the Japanese dance form of Butoh with western contemporary dance styles. Verb BalletsVerb Ballets' Spring SeriesVerb Ballets' Spring Series features the work of The Cleveland Foundation's Creative Fusion Artist-in- Residence, Ngo Thanh Phuong, in a new work exploring 21st century Vietnamese life and culture. The program also includes a world premiere by contemporary choreographer Sara Whale, inspired by the work of Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt. Ticket & Show Information
DanceWorks 2014 performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 7:30pm in CPT's Gordon Square Theatre, 6415 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44102. Tickets are $12 – $28. Take advantage of $12 tickets for Thursday shows. Student and Senior discounts ($2 off) are available for Friday and Saturday performances.
