Dance at the Forest Hills Public Library with Carol KaminskiBy Lynne B. Lubash January 9, 2001
Carol Kaminski has been giving free ballroom dancing lessons at the Forest Hills Branch of the Queens Borough Public Library for over twenty years. Ms. Kaminski, a professional dancer, has performed in summer stock with Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Hanya Holm and the Zodiac Dance Co. In honor of her work at the library, she was recently named Cable Channel New York 1's New Yorker of the week.
The day I went to her lesson, December 13, just happened to be Ms. Kaminski's birthday. People in the class brought food and cake, and a small party was held for her. Since I happened to have brought my camera, I became the unofficial photographer for the event. The people in the class are very friendly and Carol will greet you like a long lost friend, even on first meeting. She is extremely enthusiastic and is part dance instructor, part cheerleader. Over twenty people came to dance, with the most common age being 40 plus. Ability level ranged from beginning to moderate. Ms. Kaminski taught some mambo, swing and cha cha the night I went. The lessons are held in the library's downstairs auditorium.
Classes are held every Wednesday night from 6:30-7:30 P.M. Classes have been scheduled for: Jan. 3,10,17,24, 31, 2001
Feb. 7, 14, 21,28, 2001
March 7, 14, 21, 28, 2001
Classes are free, but small donations are collected so that Ms. Kaminski can purchase dance tapes. For further information call the Forest Hills Branch of the Queens Borough Public Library at 718-268-7934.
